On the Road Again

Site News

It seems to happen more often than it should; certainly once a year isn’t going overboard. SpaceVisitor has been redesigned yet again. Before you sigh with disbelief, please consider our efforts to bring you something more meaningful. This installment is just the latest in a long line of improvements that we hope is agreeable. Keep in mind that there will be other, later redesign efforts so don’t think that we are resting on our laurels.

While the basic look and feel rings similar to last year’s redesign, this time we are using a different content-management tool named Drupal. It allows me to create and post content online without synchronization and also enables readers to participate in the experience by posting comments (a long-time fan-favorite feature) if they become members. Some other interesting features include a calendar to view old posts, a blog for venting my opinions on everything from technology to politics, and of course there are more RSS feeds.

Bumper Sticker Envy

Law

There are many instances exemplifying the lunacy of the United States legal system. Overall, the U.S. has such a liberal system that anyone can sue anyone else over anything they feel like it. Another crazy example happened in March and was updated today:

March 2006 - In Athens, Georgia, a woman got a $100 ticket for having an allegedly lewd bumper sticker. She fought the ticket and got it thrown out (see "Nurse sues over ticket for anti-Bush bumper sticker"). This isn't so crazy because the law forbidding the display of profane stickers on vehicles was declared unconstitutional in Georgia. I actually agree with this much of the story so far - free speech is important and so is the ability to display any silly sticker that you want to display (following normal free speech laws, of course).

The Beginning

History

In the beginning there was nothing. Taken literally, there was nothing. At the lowest level, there was no material existence and no objects of any kind. There was no presence or even concept of space because space would in fact be something. Some have referred to this state as "empty space" but I think that this misguides you because you immediately visualize space having three dimensions. I prefer to call it "non-space."

Non-space was without end. It did not exist as there was no concept of existence. The "stuff" that would eventually become matter was in perfect equilibrium with the "anti-stuff" that together formed nothing. Theories of science and philosophy merge into ideas of dimensions beyond the first three - the dimensions that give material its size and volume. Let's assume that there are higher dimensions, whether it is energy, thought, soul, or whatever - it really doesn't matter for this discussion. It is sufficient to understand that there are these higher dimensions of existence. Let's assume that there are an infinite number of dimensions with each being "higher" than the next. Non-space would be higher than the highest, infinite dimension.

Oblique Reality

This web site has been anchored on a concept of human observation. Its mission is to observe the human condition and try and make sense of the chaos. The average person lives day to day without looking at the world around them. They may visually see things but they often do not mentally notice what these things are or how they all interact. This site is meant to shed some personal light onto an otherwise obscured human vision.

Many of the accounts and stories of this site are organized into a book format. This book, titled Oblique Reality, is much like any paper-bound book. The terms "section" and "chapter" may not be used in the classical sense, but the concept remains. Topics are presented either on a single page or spanning several pages. Sub-pages exist and form a hierarchy of information. This book is the cornerstone of SpaceVisitor.

Tool: Concert Memoirs

Personal News

Last night I attended a concert featuring Tool – a music group who ranks as one of my favorites and is often categorized as Alternative Metal, Progressive Metal, or just simply Heavy Metal. Tool is a band that tries to go beyond simply a performance of their music – they attempt to create an experience. This time was no different. This is my account of the night as I’m sure that you all care to know the details.

The concert was located at the Continental Airlines Arena, the current home of the New Jersey Nets and Devils. The night was to begin at 8:00pm, and history has shown that it would be wise to arrive early enough to find parking. Arriving as such, it was interesting to see the new parking garage. Although it was a welcome site, they still make you pay $12 for parking.

Protecting Vista

Technology

The cat and mouse game resumes its latest chapter. Ever since the invention of software, hackers have been trying to find ways not to pay for it. From serial numbers, to dongles, to activation, and even corrupting hardware, software companies have been desperate to stave off piracy. If they were successful we wouldn't be talking about it now.

Microsoft's latest attempt lies inside the Vista operating system which is soon to be released to the world (see "Microsoft warns software pirates"). Similar to Microsoft's current software activation (a.k.a. Genuine Advantage Validation), this version will allegedly cripple your operating system if you haven't proven that your license is legit within 30 days of installation. Such illegal users will also have an annoying popup reminding you that you are breaking the law.
